‘Cause everyone knows that’s how you get famous. No it’s not about me. I’m just quoting Lily Allen. Why? Well, let’s face it: only a few people are taking a look at this blog. My previous blog was read on a regular basis by people all over the world, but this one… Let’s say it’s quite lonely after a promising start.
My expectation was that energy would be “hot” (no pun intended), but looking around I noticed that the only part with some popularity might be renewables. The broader subject of energy is less common. The good news is that in previous examples of 3D-visualisations of energy we took several different approaches and renewables were a part of what was shown.
Until now we didn’t use the “green roof” functionality. What does this “green roof” mean? Well, a part of the height of a “building” in the 3D-graph can be coloured green to indicate that a part of the total value has special characteristics.
This means the part of the total production (height) which refers to renewable energy can be marked as green. Of course there is a lot of discussion going on about biomass, but real renewables are solar (mainly PV – photovoltaic), wind and hydro. This set (together with some rarer sources like geothermal and tidal energy) is marked as “non-combustible”.
By adding these values for the countries already in the 3D-graph it might be more interesting. Let’s give it a try. Remember, only the renewable electricity-part (from non combustibles) is shown as a green roof.
The captions below the screenshot, holds a hyperlink and clicking it will open the real 3D-graph (just an html-page) in your web browser.
This 3D-graph can be zoomed in and out, translated and tilted or pivoted. To zoom just hold the right mouse button and scroll up or down. Tilting or rotating is done by holding the left mouse button and moving the mouse in any direction. Double clicking somewhere in the graph will change the viewpoint! If things get confusing, refresh the page and try again. Start with clicking the right mouse-button and scrolling up, because the graph starts close to your screen.
This time I won’t tell you where to get a free copy of the full 3D-graph generator package for energy. Just look for it in the other posts 🙂
